I almost did not read this book because of a bad review but I read some of the good reviews and decided to take a chance. Boy was I ever glad I did! I recommend this book to anyone who likes an action packed who done it. I liked it so much I'm going to buy the next in the series. Enjoy a spine chilling read.Product details

I have thoroughly enjoyed and trusted James Scott Bell's book on creative writing and novel creation skills. The man is a masterful teacher and well worth the investment in his "teaching" books. But if you would like to read a genuinely exciting and entertaining thriller novel, "Try Dying" is for you. This legal thriller is a great read that had me glued to its pages from the start. Bell's protagonist Ty Buchanan, a quick-witted trial attorney, is a uniquely crafted character. The man seemingly has an endless number of witty responses and retorts no matter what situation he is placed in. Yet, at the same time, his relentless pursuit of the truth and refusal to ever back down, pushes him onward when so many others would have quit long ago. Try "Try Dying." You will be glad that you did. Heck, I am now already into the next read, "Try Darkness."
This is the first thing (besides a short story) that I've read by James Scott Bell, and I have to say this was simply the best legal thriller I've read in quite a while. I cared about the main character, I cared about his pain from his loss, and I cared about the people around him as well. I found the plot to be well constructed and logical, with all the loose ends tied up nicely by the end of the story. I found it completely believable for the most part. It was not heavy on courtroom action (which I do like) but the paths of the investigations were all solid and believable. If I have one quibble, it's that everyone seems to think the main character is just about the greatest thing. No one doesn't like him, really. The women all want him and the men all want to be like him. But really, that was minor stuff in what was, for me, a gripping and compelling read that I didn't want to put down.
In a finely crafted suspense novel or legal thriller, surely you know, “Nothing is ever as it appears”. The plot explodes on page one. Action, intrigue, complexity in layers, danger… (and humor!?! well-used.) You don’t have to design ovens to know a hot one when you touch it. I am not a professional writer (so don’t evaluate the eloquence of my review as if I were trying to prove otherwise), but I know a good writer when I read his work. This man is creative – marvelously gifted. Consequently, I am prepared to settle in for months and months of great reading. Keep’em coming, Mr. Bell.
Ty Buchanan is a man climbing the ladder of lawyerly success in LA. From there it is mostly downhill for him as he takes enough slams to the head to kill a regular person. But thankfully he's not regular, he is super-lawyer/sleuth, tracking down evil with singular focus. Bringing justice to call on the bad guys, he begins to find real purpose in life that does not require wearing expensive suits. Try Dying is an action-packed page turner. I am a proofreader & I only ran head-on into one cringe worthy booboo, the incorrect use of the past tense of the verb "to plead". I can't remember the exact words but something like "He plead the Fifth." Please, he pled the Fifth. I will not rant further on this. I am about to start Try Darkness. I highly recommend Try Dying.
Some books grab you and do not let go, and you still want more when you finish the final chapter. Other books do not last more than a chapter or two before you put them down for lack of interest.
This first book in the Ty series ranked somewhere in the middle. I really wanted to like it, and there were engaging parts throughout. However, I kept looking and hoping for more legal drama and discourse. The focus was more on drama around his fiancee's death and his struggle to find out what he was going to do with his life. So, if you are looking for a legal thriller, this would not be my first recommendation. If you are looking for a thriller/drama, then this is a decent choice. This being said, I will probably try the next book in the series to see if it offers more as a legal thriller.

2) Any course language present Kudos to author for keeping it relatively clean, several instances of the word hel* was all I noted
3) Type of book Suspenseful book putting a lawyer in a world of hurt as he battles members of both drug cartels and the law to uncover the reason his fiance was murdered
4) Formatting/Editing Well-written
5) Best/Worst aspect of book Numerous likable characters with humorous exchanges like ' "Is there anything I can do for you?" "Sure.Bring me one of your holy fruitcakes with a file in it."
6) Favorite Passage "One of the big secrets to success is always to treat with respect those who can help you. Or hurt you."
7) Bottom-line Great book and already went on to purchase more from this author!
A different kind of "courtroom drama", one that doesn't take place in court. I found this to be such a compelling story I read most of it in one setting. It is a lawyer story, but a unique one, involving a lawyer who finds himself the defendant, and has to find out who really dunnit to save himself, as well as let him finally move on from the tragic death of his fiancee in a really weird 3 way suicide, murder and automobile accident. I'm sure I will be reading other books by Mr. Bell.
